In 2000, syndicated radio DJ David "Ace" Cannon had a problem: he had zero musical experience but wanted to create compelling radio content. Inspired by ABC's "Making the Band" reality show, he pitched a wild idea... what if he formed a real band, live on air, for charity?
Enter Eddie Z, a veteran music producer and established industry professional who saw potential in the chaos. Together, this unlikely duo decided to form a cover band with one simple rule: every dollar raised would go to helping terminally ill and chronically disabled children through the Grin Kids Foundation.
The plan was simple: one show. One fundraiser. One night of fun.

Over two decades, Charity Case became more than a band, they became a family united by purpose. They headlined packed clubs across the region. They opened for rock legends including Bon Jovi, Brett Michaels, Joan Jett, Alice in Chains, LL Cool J, and Jason Mraz. They crafted high-energy performances known for killer mashups and stage presence.
But behind the electrifying shows was something deeper. Health battles that threatened to end it all. Personal losses that shook the foundation. The constant challenge of keeping a nonprofit rock band alive while balancing day jobs, families, and the exhausting reality that every show required the work of a full-time career, without the pay.
